Our science strategy

On 1 July 2022, we became the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

We are updating our website to reflect our changing role. This science strategy was developed when we were the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. It is a shared document with the new Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

We produce and commission research to apply scientific evidence to our decisions. This allows us to find innovative solutions to improve Australia's:

  • agriculture
  • environment and heritage
  • water resources.

Our success using science is due to the scientific skill of our staff and the people we work with. We collaborate with research institutions, innovators, and Indigenous Australians. We share our knowledge and expertise with our stakeholders, partners, and the community. Our strategy helps us to continually improve.

Our science vision is:

"We will be known - amongst our people, stakeholders and scientific talent - for using the best available science to inform and deliver leading regulatory, operational and policy outcomes"

Future focus

Our Future Department Blueprint is an action plan to drive change. Our blueprint supports our response to the changing needs of our country and the world.
Science gives us the most reliable method for knowing how best to respond to future challenges.

Under the blueprint we will focus on:

  • using world-class science and technology to make decisions
  • accessing reliable tools and data
  • becoming a driving force for science partnerships and networks
  • building greater understanding and trust in the role of science in decision making
  • attracting and harnessing the right talent and expertise.
