Travelling or sending goods to Australia

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)

Help protect Australia by following biosecurity requirements when travelling or returning to Australia from FMD risk countries.

On arrival

Biosecurity Response Zones are being established at international airports within Australia. These zones support the government’s strengthened response measures in place at the border to mitigate the risk of FMD entering and establishing. The zones allow biosecurity officers to implement enhanced measures including foot mats, which travellers will be required to walk over upon disembarking aircraft arriving from Indonesia. The foot mats are safe to use and are designed to treat footwear by lightly coating the soles with a thin layer of a diluted chemical disinfectant. Foot mats are rolling out across all international airports that receive flights from Indonesia. This new measure compliments other controls in place – you must still declare on your Incoming Passenger Card if you have been in a rural area, or if you are carrying food or other risk goods, including contaminated footwear, in your luggage.

See our current traveller advice.

People, animals and items travelling into the country are subject to requirements, which extend to mailing items to Australia and online purchases.

Before you submit an inquiry about whether you can bring or mail your item to Australia, let us help you find the information you are looking for with a few questions.
